About the Business

James Duff the 4th Earl of Fife founded Dufftown in 1817. The Earl was a local laird and built Dufftown, initially named Balvenie, to give employment after the Napoleonic Wars. Mortlach, nearby in the valley of the Dullan water, was already a long-established settlement dating back to at least the 700's, but was soon to be overshadowed by its new neighbour. Dufftown soon became an important area to the distilling industry and still is to this day.

Set in the 'valley of the deer' or 'Glen Fiddich', the towns plentiful water sources made it the perfect place to produce whisky. Today the town produces some of the world's most famous whiskies and is widely known as the 'malt whisky capital of the world'. Few would argue this name, as currently there are six operating distilleries in the town, these are Glenfiddich, Balvenie, Kininvie, Dufftown, Mortlach and Glendullan.
